Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park

Our camp
June 6, 2014 We are nestled in spot #5 at Paynes Prairie. This is a beautiful park we've been biking a bit, 5 miles yesterday and 4.3 miles today. No, we could go further but the critters that bite and sting have us on the ropes temporarily at least. Difficult sleeping when you are itching all the time. The local's don't seem to have our trouble but they don't have any advice about how to deal with the problem either.

Live Oaks with Spanish Moss

This park has several views; swamp, long leaf pine, savannah and marsh. If you can't see my armadillo click on him and the picture should enlarge. I rode right by him and Bosco called me back. I took several pics but he kept moving and lots were out of focus. He got tired of being the star and ran off on me. We've seen lots of birds; including a Swallowtailed Kite, and Hairy Woodpecker, wild horses and deer. The Cardinals are profuse here like robins back home.
Spent some time at the Visitors Center this morning, nice helpful people. Saw a movie about their efforts to bring this park back to it's natural state. They've reintroduced the Bison, Cracker cattle and Cracker horses. The horses they can trace back to the Spanish Andalusians left here by the Spanish explorers originally .
